Designed to treat fine lines, acne scars and improve the skin’s overall appearance, Micropen or micro-needling is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine available in the Atlanta area. In order to produce collagen and elastin, Dr. Chapman uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. The appearance of softer wrinkles and a thicker dermis form from the skin’s repair process. Topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin because of the superficial micro-channels that are created by the Micropen. The Micropen can be used to treat areas on the face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back and even helps to treat uneven texture, color, and tone of the skin.
During the procedure, Dr. Chapman will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs. Next, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. The feeling associated with the Micropen treatment is said to be like sandpaper moving across the skin. The treatment time is usually around 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. There is no downtime for the treatment, however, patients’ skin can stay red for 2-4 days following the treatment but may completely heal in little as 24 hours.
Patients normally see an immediate “glow” to their skin. Over the course of several days and weeks, visible changes to the skin develop and continue to develop for up to six months. Depending on the treatment area, a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart is recommended for patients.

Innovative and non-invasive, Ultherapy is non-surgical procedure that uses the body’s natural healing process and ultrasound in order to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin on the neck, brow, and under the chin. In one 30-60 minute session, these areas of your face can be revitalized. Although a facelift will provide the most effective results to fight aging, Ultherapy targets the deeper foundational layer of skin that is typically addressed during a facelift.
During the Ultherapy procedure, Dr. Chapman will be able to look at an image of your underlying facial skin tissue using a smooth ultrasound handpiece. From this image Dr. Chapman will then determine where to deliver small deposits of focused ultrasound energy to the deep tissue layer. Your skin will begin to produce new collagen giving you a natural toned and taut look in response to the ultrasound energy.
Patients may experience redness and some swelling after the treatment; however, there is no downtime involved with Ultherapy. Most patients can return to their normal activities directly after the procedure is completed. Ultherapy stimulates collagen production, so your face will appear younger and younger as time goes on. Over a 2-3 month period, results will continue to unfold and some patients see sustained improvement for up to six months. Natural aging will continue to occur, but results can last for years. The results of surgery cannot be duplicated by ultrasound, but Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery.

People don’t age overnight, they age gradually. For the first time ever, there is a treatment that can gradually make you look younger. Sculptra Aesthetic is not a quick fix, it is a facial injectable that gives you subtle results over time. Made with poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra is injected into the deep dermis layer of the skin to correct deep facial wrinkles and folds as well as sunken cheeks or eyes. Sculptra is made mostly of biocompatible, a biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades. Over a few months, treatments are administered to the desired area, creating results that can last up to two years. The treatment is suitable for the deep folds in between the nose and mouth called smile lines, lines framing the mouth, and chin wrinkles.
Dr. Chapman is skilled at applying Sculptra to areas that patients want to correct with a series of treatments. To learn more about Sculptra or to schedule your consultation, call LaserMed Skin & Vein Clinic today.

Today, 17 percent of those who get tattoos consider getting them removed. Young people in particular get tattoos and do not realize just how permanent they are. Fortunately, technology has advanced, and removal procedures no longer leave scars. With improved laser medicine, tattoos can be completely removed.
Tattoos in the workplace:
In this economic downturn, more and more people are turning to tattoo removal in order to advance their careers. Many are afraid potential employers may see their tattoos and place them into a stereotype. In 2012, 61 percent of human resource managers claimed that an applicant’s chances of being hired would be hindered by a tattoo.
Dr. Chapman uses a special type of laser that can emit short wavelength light beams in extremely short pulses. The tissue surrounding the tattoo goes undamaged because the laser delivers high intensity light accurately to the tattooed area. The ink gradually disappears over several treatments. Patients usually require 6-10 treatments to remove their tattoo fully depending on the depth, color, and location of the tattoo. Treatments are not painful, and most patients can return to work and their busy schedules directly after a treatment.
How much does treatment cost?:
The cost of tattoo removal varies depending on the size and color of the tattoo and how many treatments are required. Generally a tattoo about 3 inches in diameter done in blue or black ink will cost about $300 per session. LaserMed Skin & Vein Clinic also offers Care Credit Patient Payment plans.
I treated 150 patients this month, mostly women. Average age of 52. One of them is a dear lady who’s been a regular patient for several years. She’s moving away to Seattle, Washington next week. She came in to make sure she thanks us all for her treatments as well as our friendship. She is an attractive Greek woman who acts young and looks at least 10 years younger. I was wondering for the rest of that day what makes her look so young and charming other than her good genes. It dawned on me that what shines through were her smiles and thankfulness. When we thank others and smile, the endorphins and other happy hormones that circulate through our body must make us look younger.
As we all sadly know, our faces head southbound when we age. The signs show earlier for some and a good bit later for others. Nonetheless, it all seems to sag. Most of these nice ladies I see at my office are not worried that their faces don’t look like young Audrey Hepburn or Jennifer Aniston. They are concerned that their faces appear sad, more tired and more masculine than they want. I hear a lot of them say, “I wish I looked less tired than I feel.” “I wish I didn’t look so mad to my grandchildren when I’m not.” We all seem to agree that we want to look younger not to be vain but to be pleasant and healthy to ourselves and others. I have over ten years of experience in how to help these folks with lasers, injections, peels, special serums and other gadgets for their wishes.
But there is something more than that. There are several other key ingredients some of these patients bring to me that make my job more successful. I am beginning to believe that one of the essential ingredients is their smiles and thankfulness. When we appreciate what we have and what others do for us, we do so by smiling which changes our sad, tired, unhappy aging faces to happier, younger, and brighter faces. I am sure there are scientific reasons why that is true. It is just that no one will invest in long-term double-blinded placebo studies to explain why since there is product to be developed and thus no monetary benefit of such a study other than to know for sure that our faces will stay younger when we have more happy hormones by being more thankful and smiling.
I wish this patient the best in Seattle and hope to see her happy, pretty face again. She bought a smaller place in Atlanta to come back to visit, so I am sure we can keep up with her. Blessings cannot be contained within. It becomes a true blessing when it flows over to others and touches them. Thankfulness and smiles become blessings to those who give them and to those who receive them. Seems like a no-brainer that I should start adding this as part of my treatment plans for all my patients who come to see me in order to look younger and happier.
Dr. Jean Chapman did a lot of research on the technology behind Ultherapy before she decided to offer it to her patients. One of the reports that really impressed her was the blind study performed by a group of dermatological surgeons in Chicago. Their objective was to assess the ability of a nonablative, ultrasound skin tightening procedure for a brow-lift in the context of a procedure for treating the full face and neck.
They concluded that the procedure was safe and effective for facial skin tightening. A single ultrasound treatment of the forehead produced brow height elevation.

So far, my life as a 45 year old has been equal parts great fun and despair. I’ve dedicated more time to Bible studies, prayer, and re-prioritizing my life for a bigger and better purpose. Those changes have led to more love for people and more peace in life. I view my children, family, friends, neighbors, church members, and my patients as my mission ground, devoting my life’s work to them.
Now for the yucky things…
I started to push books, magazines, and other reading materials further away in order to read clearly this year. My optometrist says holding things further away from you to read typically starts being noticeable around age 45. I am so happy to know that I am average in that department. No one wants anything to be premature in the aging process!
Regularly exercising and eating healthier food, I have considered myself fairly health-minded for most of my life. I have never smoked nor done drugs and I have only ever tried sweet wine a few times. Nonetheless, I got hyperemesis gravidarum for both of my pregnancies as well as the resulting GERD. I have also had some myofacial pains and mild osteoarthritis. And recently, I have been suffering from pre-menopausal hormonal imbalances.
In my quest for better personal wellness and health, I have been drinking Kangen water which helped with GERD, myofacial pains, and my overall well-being. Also, I have gotten acupuncture treatments, chiropractic adjustments, and deep-tissue massages when my myofacial pains get worse. I recently tried yoga and was thrilled with how much it helped with everything including myofacial pains. I can’t wait to find a place to go regularly.
Furthermore, I have been taking herbal progesterone pellets called Progon B which greatly help my pre-menopausal progesterone deficiency and other symptoms. After taking PPIs(reflux medications) for seven years, I stopped them cold-turkey two years ago and have been taking natural digestive enzymes and probiotics which helped more than PPIs. I also started restricting my gluten intake which only further helped my GERD. Overall, these medical issues have been the single biggest challenge in my life since the births of my children. But they have also been blessings in helping me become a stronger person and a stronger believer in God.
However, I want to draw attention to how we as women are challenged by different issues related to our bodies at different stages throughout our lives. We all know what happens at puberty. Then come the body image issues in young adulthood followed by child births and finally, pre-menopausal symptoms and menopause. I had no idea what kind of surprises each stage of being a woman would bring, and I have studied medicine for a long time!!! I feel such a need to continue educating myself and encouraging other women to learn and understand their own bodies, especially when it comes to hormonal imbalances.
For the last twelve years, I have absolutely loved helping women look and feel better with non-surgical aesthetic procedures. I have gained a deep understanding of how to help women with their look, and as a result, gained national recognition for what I do. I have even had the privilege to teach medical students, medical residents, physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and physicians’ assistants how to perform those procedures. In my practice, I have had many fantastic opportunities to meet women of different ages, ethnicities, and walks of life gaining further knowledge of women’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs. Because of my own experiences and those of my patients, I have come to realize the importance of expanding my medical practice to include comprehensive anti-aging, naturopathic, nutritional, and hormonal balancing treatments.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story about aging and thanks for continuing to let me and my wonderful staff at LaserMed be a part of yours as well.

With Spring Break coming up..it’s very important to think about sunscreen.
Here are several things to consider when selecting & applying sunscreen
Broad spectrum & SPF (Sun Screen Protection Factor):
UVA & UVB rays have a negative impact on your skin and can lead to irritations, aging and skin
cancer. You should use a sunscreen that protects you from both UVA & UVB rays with at least a
SPF of 15. To be on the safe side, you really should pick a sunscreen with a higher SPF while
enjoying your fun in the sun.
Typically a sunscreen is considered waterproof when about 50% of its effectiveness remains after
being in the water. So with the words “waterproof” you still need to reapply!
How often & how much to apply:
Make sure you apply sunscreen 30 minutes before heading out to be in the sun and reapply every
two to three hours (including the waterproof sunscreens). The average person needs about 35 ml of
Don’t forget the following areas:
Lower lip, top of the ears, shoulders, outside of the arms, upper legs & back of the hands.
Also, besides the use of sunscreen…think about wearing protective clothing & hats and try
avoiding the sun between 10 am to 4 pm.

I recently came upon this article about the benefits of Fish Oil and wanted to share with YOU! I know you will want to consider this incredible supplement after reading the amazing benefits
1. Improves brain health
Yes – brain health is one of them! DHA, one of the major omega-3s in fish oil, helps grow your brain.. Your brain is made up of fat and mostly consists of DHA. This essential fatty acid helps improve the way your brain functions and also increases new cell growth. You’ve probably read in my earlier posts that essential fatty acids are called ‘essential’ because they must be consumed through your diet.
Surprisingly, for pregnant women it’s even more important. That’s because growing babies need DHA to fuel brain development, too. Therefore, expecting moms need extra DHA to make up for the added demand. And, studies show that moms who take fish oil are more likely to deliver babies on time and not prematurely. PLUS, children develop faster & better than peers when they themselves take fish oil supplements.
2. Good for hair, skin, nails
For women, the quest for beauty essentials is endless. And, often you wind up with gobs of product – all promising to make you look younger, firmer, prettier, and better. Thankfully, there’s one easy thing you can do that’s good for you hair, skin, and nails.
No kidding! But, you don’t have to take my word for it. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, dry & damaged hair, dry skin, and brittle nails can all be signs of low levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
3. Helps with weight loss
Despite the fact that most women are born with gorgeous curves, many struggle to lose weight (thanks a lot media!). For some, weight loss goals focus on improving health and well-being. Whatever the reason, lots of women have a hard time whipping their bodies into a slimmer shape. You may be surprised to learn that when combined with diet and exercise, fish oil can actually help you shed pounds
There are a number of studies that show fish oil can help with weight loss. Scientists think it has to do with how fish oil helps you feel fuller faster, decreases insulin resistance, and helps your body burn calories quicker.
4. Prevents and/reduces symptoms associated with menstrual cycles.
Many women experience painful and annoying cramps associated with their periods. However, there’s good evidence that taking a daily fish oil supplement can help reduce and even prevent PMS symptoms associated with menstrual cycles. Now, if that’s not good news, I don’t know what is!
5. Prevents blood clots
Women who are taking a hormonal birth control, or ‘the pill’ should pay extra attention here! Since fish oil is a natural anticoagulant, or ‘blood thinner’, there’s been a lot of research on the subject of fish oil and blood clotting.
Normally, this research focuses on the ability to prevent strokes which are seen later in life. However, it is widely known that taking birth control can greatly increase your risk of developing blood clots. If you’re taking birth control then you should be taking a fish oil supplement, too!
6. Strengthens bone density
Several clinical studies, including one from the journal Aging, show that fish oil can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, and can even strengthen mineral bone density.
7. Reduces the risk of developing breast cancer
Breast cancer is probably one of the more frightening conditions women face. Given the fact that women who consume omega-3s on a regular basis seem to be less likely to develop this cancer, fish oil clearly plays a significant role in breast health. Indeed, a recent study published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, concluded that high levels of pro-inflammatory omega-6s may be responsible for an increased breast cancer risk, and that omega-3s may help you reduce this risk.
So, there you have it.
If you’re a woman, you owe it to yourself to treat your body like the brilliant and powerful force that it is. Numerous studies show that fish oil not only offers general health benefits, but also benefits that are unique to you as a woman. Go ahead – you deserve fish oil!

We are all interested in discovering what will turn back the clock and help us look years younger. Here are a several options that the medical experts agree to be among the best.
#1: Fractionated CO2
Many doctors agree that this is the “Anti-Aging Breakthrough of the Decade”. Fractionated CO2 combines traditional carbon dioxide lasers with a new technique that contributes to less downtime. This treatment restores the look and of wrinkled and sun damaged skin and can also decrease the appearance of acne scaring and skin discoloration.
Various FDA approved fillers containing hyaluronic acid can be used to fill wrinkles creating a youthful appearance and aid in collagen production without surgery.
These skin nutrients fight aging by destroying free radicals occurring from sun exposure or pollution creating rejuvenation and skin protection.
Research continues to be generated regarding how peptides stimulate the production of collagen and slow the breakdown of collagen.
#5: Vitamin A
Retinoids are among the most studied anti-aging treatments. Over the counter (retinol) and prescription-strength Retin A products have the ability to create anti-aging results in decreasing skin wrinkles.
#6: Anti-Aging Sunscreens
Help to defend the skin against the aging effects of the sun. It is important to use a sunscreen the blocks both UVA and UVB rays!!
