The Magic of Medical Micro-Needling

It has been found that photo-aging is attributed to free radicals, resulting in permanent skin damage caused by environmental factors such as exposure to the sun’s UV rays, chemicals in foods, pollution. Photo-aging accounts for about 90% of the perceived signs of skin aging, including wrinkles, roughness, laxity, hyperpigmentation and general thinning. Unfortunately, this damage does not self-repair like a cut or bruise – this is the time to provide assistance from a skin rejuvenation technique to restore the youthful appearance.

What Does Medical Micro-Needling Do?

Medical micro-needling is one of the latest innovations in fractional microdermal skin needling used for collagen induction and initiation of cellular regeneration. It is a minimally-invasive non-surgical procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of a micro-needling device to create controlled skin injury. This treatment revitalizes, lifts and tightens the skin and improves the appearance of common skin conditions including:

•  Acne and other scars

•  Stretch marks

•  Photo-aging

•  Fine lines

•  Uneven skin texture and complexion

•  Discoloration

The objective of Medical Micro-needling is to rapidly create a pattern of micro channels in the treatment area as the device is held perpendicular to the treatment area and moved over the skin. The pens can be adjusted for speed and needle depth for proper treatment on different areas of the face or body, and the device pierces the skin rapidly so the patient feels less pain and the skin is not torn. The controlled injury introduced by the micro channels in the skin causes blood, platelets and collagen to rush to the site to repair the topical damage, resulting in a significant increase the production of collagen and elastin. In addition, new capillaries are formed. Micro channels also enhance the skin’s ability to absorb topical serums, including vitamins, skin lighteners or growth factor serums, when applied during or immediately after the procedure, which helps leave skin smoother, fresher, and more uniform.

Which Topical Serum Option is Right For Me?

Dr. Chapman offers two levels of topical serums with Medical Micro-needling treatments. The normal protocol uses a combination of Vitamin C Serum with a B5 gel. The Vitamin C supplies a boost of anti-oxidants and the B5 gel provides a boost of hydration.

A growth factor serum may be integrated into the process when photo-aging damage from sun exposure indicates a significant decline in dermal collagen content, and a decreased rate of collagen production. Studies have indicated that this damage is directly related to decreased growth factor production. Growth factors have the primary function of activating cellular activities and are comprised of proteins that bind to receptors on the cell membrane surface. In simple terms, a decline in the number of fibroblast cells, which are considered the “laborers” in the skin, results in a reduction of collagen production and simultaneously decreases the concentration levels of growth factors. It is estimated that skin loses around 1% of the number of fibroblast cells and 1% of its thickness per year, and even more when sun exposure is elevated.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Patients typically require a series of treatments to see the complete result, although improvement may be seen after a single treatment. The number of Medical Micro-needling sessions depends on the individual skin condition. Three to four treatments may be needed for moderate acne scars. Other scarring may require up to 5-6 sessions. In the case of wrinkles, sun damage and aging skin conditions, one or two refresher treatments are recommended annually. A minimum of three weeks is recommended between two treatments as it takes that long for new natural collagen to form. The length of time necessary to complete the procedure depends on the condition, typically between 10 to 60 minutes to complete the procedure.

Medical Microneedling is appropriate when facial rejuvenation is recommended, yet a laser procedure or peel may not be appropriate.
