Even for those young at heart, advancing years can become apparent on the face. For some, this inspires the desire to ‘turn back the clock’ with facial rejuvenation. In certain cases, however, traditional techniques such as surgical facelifts are contraindicated or can simply feel like a really big step. Fortunately, it is now possible to have a liquid facelift, an anti-aging procedure that provides the rejuvenating effects many patients desire without the need for surgical treatment.
What is a liquid facelift?
A liquid facelift creates an extensive and long-lasting anti-aging effect through the use of multiple injectable treatments, specifically facial fillers and products such as Botox. While such dermal injectable treatments are often used in isolation to treat one or more targeted skin areas, a liquid facelift can provide a custom-tailored treatment for multiple areas and even the whole-face.
How does a liquid facelift compare to a surgical facelift?
A liquid facelift offers numerous benefits over the traditional surgical approach to this procedure. One of the primary advantages for many patients is that a liquid facelift eliminates the need for general anesthesia and hospitalization: the procedure is instead performed in an outpatient setting and with minimal discomfort.
Another main advantage lies in the lack of downtime associated with a liquid facelift. A standard surgical lift can require weeks of recovery and can include unsightly swelling and bruising. However, the use of facial fillers can make the results of a liquid facelift immediately apparent and the process allows an immediate return to normal activities.
A further advantage of a liquid facelift is the ability to readily modify and enhance the results over time as aging continues. It is generally desirable to ‘touch up’ a liquid facelift a few years after an initial procedure, providing a subtle and adaptable anti-aging effect that adjusts to the on-going changes of the facial appearance. The significantly reduced investments in both time and money make such follow-up facelifts appealing and affordable to maintain.
What types of liquid facelifts are available?
The process of liquid facelifts was recently pioneered by a Brazilian plastic surgeon. Since those first treatments, a number of techniques have been combined to suit the needs of individual patients during liquid facelifts. Generally, the procedure is performed with a focus on the three regions of the face: upper, middle and lower. Some physicians, however, prefer to use an 8-point approach to designing their patients’ liquid facelifts.
The choice of the specific technique or techniques used in each facial region will depend on whether the goal is to lift the entire face or only certain features within each region. While facial fillers are applied in areas that have lost their fullness, other facial injectables are used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Products commonly used in liquid facelifts include Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane and Sculptra.
